Imagine my surprise and delight when I heard not only my question read on the podcast but my name as well! It made my day!
First, thank you for commenting on my question. The comments that you all gave were helpful, especially when it was stated that we should not to fit the story to the word count, but tell the story like it wants to be told. That actually helps in another area as well.
In the story I’m working on I wanted the plot to progress in one specific direction. I wanted the main male character to have his moment of internal pain and agony, make the difficult choice, and leave the story open to what would happen next. However, no matter how many times I tried to end the story in the way I wanted it to end, the story didn’t sit right with me. So I changed one bit and it seems (in my mind at least) to make the story better.
But…plot. Yeah. I don’t know if the story would be interesting to others. I understand that it is fine to write for oneself (and I do have folders full of such stories), but I do want others to read what I write. Not for profit necessarily, but so I can improve.
tl;dr: Thanks for the pointers, keep up the awesome work, I’m letting the story tell itself like it wants, but I’m nervous that it lacks connection with the reader.
stl;drte: I liek cheese.
Did you know I do a podcast with such creative delights as +John Robey and +Buck Turner ? It’s true. It’s all about short stories, and I love doing it.

The podcasting software we use created four different folders for this week’s show, but didn’t record a single file. >.< So the show was lost!
We will try to get something put up Wednesday anyway, please stay tuned.

“Now, maybe because I’m a short story neophyte, but how do you define a short story? Is it by word count, or something else? Oh, and thanks for the layout information…I’ve been double spacing after my periods since high school! Never knew it was only single space.”

Hey, all! Scheduling conflicts forced us to punt this week, but we are on track to record this weekend.
Also, starting with episode eight, we’ll be posting the shows on Wednesday instead of Tuesday, just to give our dangerously-talented team of editing gnomes a little extra leeway between recording and posting. (The exact words used in their request were, “Gneech, if you make us stay up to 3:00 a.m. one more time, we’re going to shove you into a trunk and lock you in the attic.”)
So! We’ll get it all together and see you on Wednesday, August 10th.

Greeting Geeks,
I’ve been writing off and on for a few years, however find I have very little to show for it aside from a number of half-finished stories.
Often times I’ll be trying to write on one story when I’ll have an idea for another story I’m writing, not wanting to lose the idea I’ll jot it down as a note but I end up derailing my train of thought for the story I’m trying to work on. Any tips or suggestions for handling a muse which loves to torment you?
In one story I’ve been working on, a person is relating a story to the main character. Within that narrative, I find myself writing characters which give further narratives… so a story, within a story, within my story. I realized too many layers of ‘story’ gets silly rather quickly… like a chain of flashbacks. And considered revising the sub-narratives to be limited to a paragraph or two, but then it felt like those characters were just bad story-tellers and didn’t necessarily cover all the info I wanted to cover in the narrative… Is there any good general rule of thumb for when you’re giving too much narrative within the frame of another story?
I think that’s all for now, but I will say, “Buck, welcome to Texas, and hope to see you at Furry Fiesta next year.”
So until next time, keep your pencils sharp, your spell-checker engaged, and remember paperclips know very little about proper grammatical forms.
/.-, VVolf
